Having enjoyed the pontifus viscera chart and puzzled over ways to fit it to non-mecha anime, I found myself struck by a foolish idea…

Alright, this is kind of cheating, since it’s less like a measurement of emotional reactions and more like some sort of horrible d&d alignment system (can I be Airship Neutral?). 

But after a fashion you could see it as a chart of contradictions. When Miyazaki’s in the middle we have a theoretical balance between love of machines and tree hugging. At the extremes we either feel intensely proud about saving the planet in our titanic metallic industrial air fort or, conversely, live in a safe zone where we can just enjoy the drawings without the true feelings of the man who made them.

Of course, many of the rankings I invented here are just horseshit. Ponyo I have decided is almost airshippy because those boats were proper cool. Likewise Cagliostro has gadgets which amuse me. Kiki actually has airships, but I’ve bumped it down a bit because the film establishes that it’s clearly so much better to have a broomstick.
